The University of North Carolina is an institution committed to innovation and entrepreneurship. 1789 is the University's central hub where entrepreneurship happens for UNC students and grads with an idea for a for-profit, non-profit or social entrepreneurial venture.
Our goal at 1789 is to provide space and support for young innovators seeking intentional growth. We are a launch pad into an action-oriented entrepreneurial community focused on creating and scaling great startups. Given a chance, we are eager to help entrepreneurs at all stages of their journeys. Start at 1789, grow your venture and graduate to Launch on Rosemary Street, Chapel Hill's business accelerator.
With an open, flexible workspace conveniently located at 173 E. Franklin Street in the heart of downtown Chapel Hill, we are the bridge between entrepreneurial activity on campus and the larger world. We provide special support for students and alumni starting their own ventures, including access to relevant mentors and business coaches as well as all essential services (legal, accounting, etc.). The 1789 team regularly hosts workshops, classes, office hours, and events in partnership with groups like Launch Chapel Hill, the Campus Y, the UNC Minor in Entrepreneurship, as well as the Carolina Challenge.
Here is just a sample of 1789 activity from this past year:
● 1789 Summer Startup Lab
● Triangle Startup Weekend events
● CUBE Social Innovation Boot Camp
● Global Entrepreneurship Week events
● Joe Start Up Digital Marketing Workshops
● Entrepreneurship Minor’s first-year seminar class
